New York is a diverse and modern metropolitan city made up of many different districts. East Village makes up part of the Lower East side, but is often mentioned independently because it has so much to offer. This area was traditionally home to many immigrant families, but in recent years housing prices have risen significantly. Anyone visiting East Village will be able to find lots of different things to do in this exciting and quirky neighbourhood.
10. East Village Walking Tour: East Village in itself is a tourist attraction. There are a few different walking tours around the area. You will be able to look at some historic buildings in this neughborhood.
9. Ottendorfer Public Library: The Ottendorfer Public Library is located in an historic building which was built in 1883. This is the oldest library in New York.
8. Momofuku Noodle Bar: Momofuku noodle bar has a very good reputation for serving up delicious noodles in many different cuisines from around the world. There are even 4 different Momofuku restaurants in New York, with the Noodle Bar being located in East Village. This is a very modern restaurant which serves delicious food. They also have late night opening until 2AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
7. The Alamo: The Alamo is a modern sculpture just outside Astor Place Subway station. It was created in 1966. This is interactive as it can even be spun around on the pivot which makes it great fun.
6. The Ukrainian Museum: The Ukrainian Museum was opened in 1976 and is one of the biggest museums devoted to Ukrainian culture in the US. The museum has been in the current building since 2005. This has over 8000 artifacts split into many different categories. It is considered by many as being the most important collection of Ukrainian artifacts outside of The Ukraine.
5. Joe’s Pub: Joe’s Pub is a different place to visit in East Village. This is a small bar which has live music performances most nights of the week. The bar serves food and has a list of upcoming events available over the internet.
4. St. Marks in the Bowery: This has been an active Christian church for over 350 years. It is a beautiful building which has some unique statues and art work. The building itself originally started life as a family chapel in 1660. This is the oldest church in New York City.
3. East 9th Street: East 9th Street is a popular shopping destination which is home to lots of different boutiques and fashion stores. You will find toys, music and vintage clothing in the many small independent shops.
2. Tompkins Square Park: This park is named after a past Governor of New York City - Daniel Tompkins. The park was renovated and opened again in 1992 which means that it is still quite modern and has good features. This is a good park to relax in after enjoying frantic city life.
